Technology, Technology, Technology

Recently, I was searching for a topic for a blog post. I thought about what people around me are doing this summer. Till is editing his next film. Allie is working with the photos of her recent trips in Photoshop. Pat, a biographer, is preparing for her lecture in Spain. Everything anyone is doing revolves around some form of technology. No longer does one only grind some clay into pigment and paint a picture or only dip a nib into an inkwell and write a novel. Today the ability to manipulate technology goes hand in hand with the ability to paint, write or any other creative effort.

I'll give you an example. Years ago, as part of my application process to Maryland Institute College of Art, I had to submit a portfolio. I have very clear memories of maneuvering with my portfolio on the Baltimore City Transit System, the Number #15 bus to Overlea, to be precise. My portfolio was a large black leatherette thing with thin black ribbons to tie it together. It was awkward and people stared and glared as I tried not to push it into anyone going down the aisle of the bus.

Recently, a Del Rio artist, Kendrick Corp also had to submit a portfolio as part of his application for an Artist-in-Residence program at the Irish Museum of Modern Art in Dublin, Ireland. No bulky, clumsy portfolio needed. Kendrick completed the entire process on-line, submitting photos of his work digitally. He is waiting to hear from them.

Want to see Kendrick's work in real time, in the non-virtual world? His work is on display at the Firehouse for the month of August. The Opening Reception is Friday, August 3, 2012 from 7-9 p.m., as a part of Del Rio's First Friday Art Walk. Come see his work.
